Despite what many think, these variations are not always external and their manifestations vary. There are many intersex folx who are unaware of their intersex identity. One reason for this is that the internal variations are not obvious without medical testing and, unless there is a reason to do those tests, it remains unknown. A more sinister cause is medical procedures performed on them as children without their, and often their parents’, consent.
