Lola x Kenneth

“Hello! My name is Kenneth and my grandmother (“lola” in Tagalog) is Crescenciana. I moved back home to San Jose in 2014 to help care for Lola, and we started working together. Lola makes watercolor paintings, and I add drawings based on her stories and memories. Together we’re The Lola x Kenneth Collaboration.

Shop our prints, pins, and t-shirts, designed by us—your neighbors in San Jose. My grandmother makes the paintings. I promise to finish everything she starts.” -Kenneth Ronquillo, owner of The Lola x Kenneth Collaboration

Set. Grow. About the design: Lola painted green watercolor strokes that I turned into hills and rice terraces. Lola’s parents had many hustles in the Philippines, among them growing rice. Lola would tell me that entails sewing seeds with a water buffalo, spending days bent over pulling weeds, reaping the harvest and threshing. It’s a process long and laborious. And she loved it. Looking back, I recognize that Lola spoke about farming rice and raising all of us in a similar fashion. She never complained how much she had to labor to foster a single grain of rice to grow. - U011
