Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a joyful celebration meant to honor our departed loved ones and is still practiced today in Mexico, Latin America and some parts of the United States. The holiday reminds us that life is short, our loving relationships are paramount and the spirits of the dead are always with us. El Novio’s boutonnière and La Novia’s bouquet and dress are adorned with cempasúchitl, a bright orange marigold whose scent guides souls back to their homes and loved ones. The tonalpohualli is a 260 day sacred Aztec Calendar and is one of two calendars used by the Aztecs as well as other Pre-Columbian peoples of central Mexico. The tonalpohualli has been called a sacred calendar because its main purpose is that of a divinatory tool. It divides the days and rituals between the gods. According to Aztec cosmology, the universe is in a very delicate equilibrium with opposing divine forces competing for power. Aztecs believe that everything ultimately consists of two opposing forces and the world is always on the brink of spiritual or physical destruction. To prevent this from happening, the gods have been given their own space, their own time, and their own social groups to rule over.
